Despite going undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, former Maryland Terrapins quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, younger brother of Miami Dolphins star Tua Tagovailoa, will get a chance to showcase his skills at the Seattle Seahawks' rookie minicamp this week.
Taulia Tagovailoa set all-time records with Maryland
Tagovailoa finished his college career as the Big Ten's all-time leader in passing yards (11,256) and ranked seventh in passing touchdowns (76) and total offensive yards (11,473).
However, questions regarding his arm strength, particularly compared to elite prospects, led to him being passed over in the draft.
Tagovailoa's experience as a four-year starter at Maryland shouldn't be overlooked either.
He consistently put up big numbers, throwing for over 3,000 yards in each of his final three seasons and earning All-Big Ten honors twice.
Now, Taulia has a chance to follow in his brother's footsteps and carve his own path in the NFL.
Could we see two Tagovailoas in the NFL next season?
The Seahawks, who currently have Geno Smith and Sam Howell on their roster, offer an intriguing landing spot for Taulia.
While the top spots on the depth chart are likely locked in, there's an opportunity for him to impress and potentially compete for a backup role.
The Maryland product will have to battle for the third QB spot with former Saint Louis, Hawaii and San José State quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, who the team signed as an undrafted free agent contract.
While his size (listed at 5-foot-11, 208 pounds) might be a slight concern for some NFL teams, Taulia boasts impressive mobility and the ability to create plays outside the pocket.
He also possesses "a baseline degree of arm talent," according to Pro Football Network's Ian Cummings, who believes Taulia can generate enough velocity for short-range throws.
With a strong performance at the rookie minicamp, he could potentially land a spot on the Seahawks' roster and begin his professional journey in Seattle.
